I remember when the comic book Spawn first came out int he 90′s. I also remember destroying one of my sisters copies of the comic by tracing the spawn logo with the comic underneath it, I also remember making a Spawn sculpture, in the one of only two art classes I ever took, out of masking take and paint.
I like Spawn. It’s an awesome creation.
The power of twitter actually got me to listen to this band a while back. I saw a link, I saw a “This band is awesome” review with the link and decided to give them a try. I wasn’t disappointed.
With the heavy drum beats and guitar riffs of their first song, “Burn, Burn” I dug Nico Vega immediately. They’re a great rock out with your socks off kind of band, the type you can sit back and just jam to with songs like “ Gravity”, “Living Underground”, and “ Beast” there’s a variety of awesome music to bang your head to.
They do a lot for a band that doesn’t have a bass player, so much so that you don’t even realize it until it’s pointed out to you.
Then there is Aja Volkman’s vocals which are astounding. I’m a fan of female vocals in any kind of band, there’ s a range that they can hit and a sound they can achieve that’s far better than most male vocals. Aja Volkman’s no exception, she can hit the notes and span the range.
Over the years they’ve released several EPs and an album. I’m hoping to see more from them and soon.
Third Time’s a Charm
Written By: Alex Claw
Imagine existence, for a lack of a better word, as an infinitely massive bowl of jellybeans and every jellybean a self-contained universe. Then imagine that bowl of jellybeans being constantly stirred, so that all the beans are moving and bouncing off one another.
We discovered that with each bounce there was a moment where we could connect to a neighboring universe.
We lost California to some cephalopod creatures on our first try
Our second try we lost Nevada to nightmare monsters.
The third time’s a charm.
There has to be something wonderful out there. We just have to keep trying.
Great responsiblity, blah, blah, blah. We all got that, but what we still haven’t gotten is how awesome Spiderman/Pete are. They’re swell.
I’ve been a lot slower at this than I hoped.
It’s the opening organ tone on the Thermals’ album “ The Body, The Blood, The Machine” that’s hooked me to their music, then the song began and I was all weak knees and gushing fan girl.
From that time on, I’ve been hooked to the Thermals and consider them one of the top five bands that I can listen to all day, everyday, and not once get sick of them. That, to me, is the sign of a good band. Where you can listen to their music for days, weeks, months, and years on end and not even get tired of it even though the play out creeps up toward the thousands.
“The Body, The Blood, The Machine” was The Thermals third album, since then they’ve come out with two others, “Now We Can See” and “Personal Life” and each album they put out seems to revolve around a central theme, be it political, religious, internal struggles, etc.
Personally I love the “The Body, The Blood, The Machine”, but “Now We Can See” is a close second. The former album, is a look at religion and their own views of it, the second is more introspective and thoughtful, as if they’re trying to plump the depths of their own souls and see what they find. All damned good stuff.
“More Parts per Million” was their first album, and it’s got what one would call the lofi, garage rock, badly recorded sound that for me is a turn off. I like music; I like clean music, and the not well recordedness that’s going on in some bands doesn’t do much for me.
“Fuckin’ A” was their second album, a more politically charged album that has some good songs and saw them maturing as artists.
For all the love and glee I have to the band, I think I’ve only caught them in concert about half a time. The half being coming in late to their show and only catching about three songs before they finished up. Sadness there, but that’s what you get when you figure bands don’t come on when they say they’re coming on stage.
Overall, love the band, love their music, and I’m listening to it right now, so should you.
Darkness Critters
Written By: Alex Claw
I’ll tell you this, son. There are things that go thump in the night; there are things that hide in the shadows. They are terrifying, horrible things that want your tasty well nourished flesh. They crave it like you crave donuts and a cup of coffee. They hide in darkness and when you’re not looking, they’ll get you and eat you.
And they are EVERYWHERE!
They fear the light and there’s only one way to protect yourself, son.
You can buy my nifty flashlights. They’re LED so they’ve got a long lifespan, plus they’re discounted for today and today only.
Carrier of the vorpal sword, user of the Witching Cloak, and nearly single handedly destroyed the Empire. Plus, he’s a great horn player and looks fantastic in blue.
I try to keep a list of the work that I have to do on a daily basis, most of it tends to stay the same, but occasionally there are some new things tossed on it. Today is no different, no, take that back. Today is different because I was supposed to do most of these yesterday, but didn’t. therefore, they have to be done today.
Procrastination, y’gotta love it.
I”m ambitious in what I think I can accomplish on a daily basis.
They’ve come out with a new music video and it’s utterly fantastic.
The hair is also pretty awesome. Go and watch it, folks. You won’t regret it.
